Lymph System 101
1.
The Lymphatic System does not have its own pump (like the heart pumps blood; therefore, it can stagnate. This stagnation can lead to congestion in the body.
2.
The lymphatic system and cardiovascular systems function together to ensure healthy circulation of fluids in the body.
3.
Lymph is a clear, colorless fluid that contains water, protein molecules, cellular components and fatty acids that need to be transported back into the blood stream.
4.
Seventy percent of lymph vessels are located in the skin. They are also located in almost all tissues and organs. Some are located deeper in the body.
5.
Lymph vessels have a one-way valve to prevent backflow of fluid into the interstitial spaces. Heavy pressure closes the flaps and slows or stops the flow of lymph.
6.
Lymph circulation is stimulated by the nervous system, contraction of muscles and mechanical stimulation or traction.
7.
Lymph nodes are distributed throughout the body with major ones located in the head, neck, chest, abdomen and groin.
